History of Old Lighthouse, Puducherry
Tracing its history back to the 19th century, the Old Lighthouse was constructed by a famous engineer Louis Guerre in the year 1836. Featuring a modern design with a unique structure, the Old Lighthouse, built over a rectangular base, is 29 meters high and has 3 openings: one for the watchman, another for an inhouse shop, and the last one for a staircase that takes you directly to the top of the tower.
However, after being in existence for many years, it went out of order and was shut down in 1979. To fulfill the needs of people traveling from the ocean to the city, the French rulers planned to set up a new Lighthouse, which is currently nestled in Kirapalaiyam Village. Although the present Lighthouse looks prominent at 157 feet of height, the Old Lighthouse is still considered an important part of the Pondicherry tour and is frequently visited by tourists of all ages.
