The gorgeous vistas coupled with lush greenery and deep historical significance comprise most of the top tourist attractions of Puducherry. With an array of serene beaches such as Serenity beach, Auroville, Paradise, and Promenade amongst others, you have the opportunity to explore unspoken nuances of this small Union Territory.

One such historical place to visit in Puducherry is the French War Memorial.

All About the Memorial

The French memorial is dedicated to the war heroes of World War I who sacrificed their lives to save the country. Reconstructed in 1970, it is one of the most pristine places to visit in Puducherry. Surrounded by plush green escapades and some splendid gardens, the war memorial serves as a reminder of the freedom we enjoy today.

#Trivia: It was originally built in 1937 and inaugurated on 3rd April 1938 by the Governor of Crocicchia. It is also known as the ”Monument aux combattants des Indes françaises morts pour la patrie” in French. Incidentally, Puducherry still has a heavy French influence visible in its vintage buildings and the colour scheme used across the UT.

You will find a bronze statue of bas-relief situated right behind the main monument that marks the arrival of Duplex in 1742. On 14th July every year, the entire memorial comes alive with glittering lights to commemorate the martyrdom of the soldiers and a chance to celebrate their life.

While it has a quaint setting, you can definitely enjoy the tranquillity it possesses and the sheer whiteness of the structure that offsets the lush greenery well. The French war memorial is a must visit place in Puducherry for any tourist.

Best time to visit the memorial

Puducherry, a UT, experiences heavy rainfall from June to September, making it impossible to travel and explore. Therefore, the best time to visit is from October to March, when the sun shines just right, and the cool breeze captivates your mind and soul.
