South Indian Traditional Arts society (or SITA Cultural Centre) isn’t a regular tourist spot. But it’s where you can discover and learn about the Pondy culture and many Indian traditions. It organises vivid classes and workshops in varied art forms.

Sita Cultural Centre is a Franco-Indian training and educational centre. It organises regular classes on traditional dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Indian martial arts Kalaripayattu. It also offers fun and interesting workshops to learn to cook, imprint mehndi on hands, and draw Kolam designs.

It is a charming place to learn about the Pondy culture. You get hands-on practice with South Indian arts and learn a new skill while you unwind and relax. You can enjoy the Pondy cycle tour and rejuvenating massages too.

Sita Cultural Centre Pondicherry also hosts stage performances, art exhibitions and many other cultural events.

1. Ride a cycle around the town – Sita Cultural Centre cycle tour is a 2-hour guided tour in the morning. You ride along the beachside promenades and narrow streets, witnessing the cultural traditions and architecture of the neighbourhoods. You can also explore colourful wall graffiti around the town during street art cycle rides and photography classes.

2. Learn to cook traditional dishes – You can learn to cook traditional South Indian dishes in the cooking classes. Here, you can unlock the secrets of French cooking and Creole cooking too. Pastry and baking sessions are also held. You can share a meal with a Pondy family too, getting a taste of the Pondicherry cuisine.

3. Get trained in different dance forms – SITA society has different dance classes teaching traditional Bharatanatyam, classical ballet, Bollywood dance style and many more dance forms. Sita Cultural Centre even has sessions for Pilates, Yoga and meditation, apart from dance classes.

4. Attend south Indian art workshops – You can learn to make Jimikki style earrings and pendants and flower garlands in the workshops here. Mehndi art classes, Kolam design sessions and Thanjavur painting workshops are also conducted. Then, you can also learn to drape a saree in the saree wearing workshop.

5. Pick up a new language – SITA holds regular language classes for English, French, and Tamil. Individual classes are available. But you can join the groups and learn about different cultures along with the languages.

6. Relax yourself with massages – Sita Cultural Centre also has professional therapists for Reflexology foot massages and calming and nourishing Ayurvedic body massages. You can get relaxing Thai massages too. And you can even learn different massage treatments in the workshops here, along with the benefits of Ayurvedic medicines.

Sita Cultural Centre Timings and Entry Fee

Except for Sunday, Sita Cultural Centre is open on all days of the week. It is open from 9 AM to 7.30 PM, and the activities are divided among two shifts. The morning shift is from 9 AM to 1 PM, and the afternoon shift is from 3 PM to 7.30 PM.

And the timing for the morning Pondicherry city bike tour is from 7 AM to 9 AM.

The entry to Sita Cultural Centre is free for all. But the activities are charged as per the group size and availability. You'll need to enquire and book in advance.
